Contains the following type of materials: photographs of sketches and drawings. Covers the following war: Civil War. General description of the collection: The Joseph Becker photograph collection contains modern photographic reproductions of original pencil sketches and drawings by artist Joseph Becker (1841-1900) and others prepared for Frank Leslie's illustrated newspaper. Some of the illustrations also appear in FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED FAMOUS LEADERS AND BATTLE SCENES OF THE CIVIL WAR published in 1896. Most of the sketches are of Civil War battles, camps, and incidents. They were used to produce the illustrations published in Leslie's works. When known, the date that an illustration was published is noted. Civil War period sketches are organized alphabetically by state and place. The works of the following Civil War era artists, including some who were soldiers, are included: John Avery, Jr.; Joseph Becker; C.E.H. Bonwill; W.T. Crane; H.C. Curtis; John Gaddis; J.F.E. Hillen; E.B. Hough; Henri Lovie; Arthur Lumley; W.R. McComas; James W. McLaughlin; George Mendell; T.A. Schell; William V. Shaw; Charles Soule, Jr.; J.E. Taylor; Bill D. Travis; and others identified by partial signatures or only their initials. The collection also includes post-Civil War, non-military drawings of a variety of subjects including the Great Chicago Fire (1871), American and European scenes, and other miscellaneous views.
